Table of Contents

Every few years, a new technology arrives with a bold promise to make professional web design obsolete.

A decade ago, it was the rise of Wix and Squarespace. Today it's ChatGPT, Claude and Loveable.

The pitch is seductive: type a short prompt about your business, and get a professional website in minutes that ranks on Google and floods your inbox with leads. If only it were that easy!

Since 2014, Wolf IQ has built over 1,400 websites. We’ve seen tools come and go, and we’ve watched DIY platforms evolve from "clunky" to "capable."

These tools can be fantastic for smaller side projects, but they are not magic wands.

We put the leading AI WordPress builders to the test. Can they replace a professional agency in 2026?

Key Takeaways

  • AI website builders are fast — but fast is not the same as effective. Most produce generic, poorly structured sites that require significant rework before they are ready for a real business. Speed is a feature, not a strategy.
  • There are two distinct types of AI WordPress tools: full site generators (like 10Web and ZipWP) that build an entire WordPress site from a prompt, and integrated AI assistants (like Elementor AI and Divi AI) that accelerate work within an existing page builder.
  • For simple brochure sites, landing pages, or rapid prototyping, AI builders are a legit option. For a business that depends on its website for leads, revenue, or brand credibility, a professional build is still the right investment.
  • The hidden costs of AI builders — redesigns, poor SEO structure, scalability limitations, and eventual rebuilds — often exceed the upfront savings. The initial low cost is a false economy for any business with growth ambitions.
Wolf IQ’s verdict: AI builders are powerful tools in the hands of a professional. They are not a replacement for one.

Website AI Builder Summary Table - Wolf IQ

Core Categories of AI Tools

The market is flooded with tools branding themselves as “AI website builders.”

However, this single term is used to describe two fundamentally different types of products.

Infographic comparing AI full site generators versus integrated AI design assistants for WordPress - Wolf IQ

Category 1 - Full Website AI Generators

These tools are the ones that most closely match the public imagination of an AI website builder.

You provide a text prompt describing your business, and the AI generates a complete, multi-page WordPress installation. This includes creating pages, writing initial copy, sourcing images, and setting up a theme and navigation menu. The end result is a real, self-hosted WordPress website that you can then customise.

These platforms are best understood as “AI-powered onboarding.”

They dramatically reduce the time it takes to get from a blank canvas to a live website. They are designed for users who want a website now and are willing to trade customisation and strategic depth for speed and simplicity.

Key players in this category include 10Web, ZipWP, and DreamHost Liftoff.

Category 2 — Integrated Website AI Assistants

These are not website generators. Instead, they are AI features that are integrated directly into existing, popular WordPress page builders. They do not create a full site from a single prompt. Rather, they act as a “co-pilot” for a human and assist with specific tasks within the builder environment.

This could involve writing a paragraph of text for a specific section, generating a selection of layout variations, creating an image, or even writing custom code snippets.

These tools are designed to accelerate the workflow of a practitioner who already knows how to use the underlying page builder. They are about making professionals more efficient, not about replacing them.

Key players here are Elementor AI and Divi AI.

The 4 Tools Wolf IQ Tested

We focused on the four most prominent and widely used tools in the AI WordPress space.

While other options exist, such as SeedProd, Brizy AI, and the native builder on WordPress.com, these four represent the core of the market and the different approaches available.

To provide a consistent basis for comparison, we generated a test site for a fictional Australian business:

“Aussie Flow Plumbing, a family-owned plumbing business in Castle Hill, Sydney, specialising in emergency residential and commercial plumbing services.”

10Web AI Builder

10Web AI website builder dashboard showing the automated WordPress site generation process - Wolf IQ

How 10Web Works

A managed WordPress hosting platform that includes an AI site generator. The AI builds a site using a customised version of the free Elementor page builder.

The process is straightforward. You provide the business description, and the AI generates a visual site structure in a tree diagram format. Once you approve the structure, the full site is built and becomes available for editing within 10Web’s hosting environment.

The Output

For our Aussie Flow Plumbing test, 10Web produced a competent, if generic, 6-page website.

The copy was okay but filled with clichés (“your trusted local plumber,” “no job too big or too small”).

The images were generic stock photos of American-looking plumbers and houses. The layout was clean but indistinguishable from a standard Elementor template.

After generation, you are dropped into a customised Elementor editor. If you’re familiar with Elementor, you’ll find your way around. However, the experience is constrained by the 10Web platform.

The team at Wolf IQ found that making significant structural changes was less intuitive than in a standard WordPress installation.

What we loved

The visual site-planning step is genuinely useful. You get a good degree of control over the output before it’s generated.

The final site is clean, functional, and provides a solid starting point. For a business that needs a simple online presence quickly, it works.

Where we struggled

The platform is essentially a customised version of the free Elementor plugin, wrapped in a proprietary hosting environment. This creates a degree of vendor lock-in.

The AI credits for content and image generation are limited on the lower-tier plans, and the AI-generated images often have the tell-tale signs of being machine-made.

The learning curve to customise the site beyond the initial generation is also steeper than the marketing materials suggest. At some point during simple edits, 10Web would lag and take a while to make the changes.

Wolf IQ’s take: 10Web is a legitimate tool for simple use cases. We might use it to quickly prototype a site structure for a client to review, but we would not use it to deliver a final, professional product. The limitations are too significant for a business that views its website as a critical asset.

ZipWP

ZipWP AI WordPress builder interface for rapid prototyping and site generation - Wolf IQ

How ZipWP Works

A host-agnostic AI WordPress site generator from the team behind the popular Astra theme and Spectra page builder.

You provide a detailed prompt, and ZipWP generates a complete WordPress site—including theme, content, images, and pages—in under 60 seconds. The resulting site can be hosted on ZipWP’s own infrastructure or, crucially, exported and installed on any other web host.

The Output

For our Aussie Flow Plumbing, the result was impressive in its speed and completeness.

It generated a visually appealing site using the Astra theme, with well-structured pages. The copy was still generic, but it was better organised than 10Web’s.

The images were higher quality, though still clearly North American stock photos. The inclusion of pre-built sections like a testimonial slider and a “Why Choose Us” feature grid was a nice touch.

Because ZipWP allows you to export a standard WordPress installation, the customisation experience is excellent. You are free to use the standard WordPress dashboard, install any plugins you like, and edit the site with the Spectra builder (a capable, if less popular, alternative to Elementor).

What we loved

The ability to export the site and avoid hosting lock-in is a major advantage over competitors like 10Web.

The quality of the initial design and layout is also a step above average for this category. Most generations were taken from templated designs rather than a full custom design build.

Where we struggled

The trade-off for the free plan is that sites expire after 24 hours.

There is no option for local site creation, which is a limitation for professional development workflows.

The AI-generated content is, like all current-generation tools, generic and requires a complete rewrite for any serious business. With over a million users, the designs, while clean, are also starting to become recognisable.

Wolf IQ’s take: ZipWP is arguably the best of the full site generators due to its flexibility and output quality. We would confidently use it to generate a first draft for a client presentation. However, as a standalone solution for a business that needs to compete online, it is not sufficient. The output is a starting point, not the destination.

Elementor AI

Elementor AI website builder interface showing integrated AI tools for layout and copy - Wolf IQ

How Elementor AI Works

A suite of AI features integrated directly into the Elementor page builder.

It is not a site generator; it is a set of tools that assist with content, layout, and image creation within the Elementor editor. The AI is available as a sidebar assistant within the Elementor editor. From there, you can generate text for a specific section, create variations of a layout, produce images, or even generate custom CSS code.

A separate “Site Planner” feature uses a chat interface to help develop a creative brief for your site.

The Output

We tested Elementor AI by building a new “Commercial Plumbing” page for our Aussie Flow Plumbing site.

The experience was fluid. We used the AI to write a draft of the page copy, which was a good starting point but required significant editing to add specific details and a more professional tone.

We then used the image generator to create a hero image, which took several attempts to get something that didn’t look overtly artificial. The layout assistant was the most useful feature, quickly generating several different column and container structures for us to choose from.

What we loved

The integration with Elementor is solid.

For the millions of WordPress professionals who already use Elementor, the AI feels like a natural extension of their existing workflow.

The AI has been trained on Elementor’s design system, so its outputs are consistent with the builder’s structure. It is genuinely useful for accelerating copywriting and exploring different layout options.

Where we struggled

This is not a website builder. It is a co-pilot for a skilled operator.

A non-technical user would find it confusing and overwhelming. The use of a credit system on lower plans feels restrictive.

Wolf IQ’s take: This is a genuinely useful tool for practitioners. We use AI-assisted content generation and ideation in our own professional workflow. Elementor AI is a solid implementation of this, but it is a tool for professionals, not a shortcut for beginners.

Divi AI

Divi AI website builder showcase featuring deeply integrated AI design features - Wolf IQ

How Divi AI Works

AI features that are deeply integrated into the Divi theme and builder ecosystem.

Similar to Elementor AI, Divi AI operates within the visual builder. It can generate text, images, and entire sections based on the context of the page you are working on.

The Output

We used Divi AI to generate a full site for Aussie Flow Plumbing.

The process was fast, but the result was underwhelming. The design felt dated compared to the other builders, and the layout choices were questionable.

The main selling point is the deep integration; if you are a Divi power user, the AI can generate elements that perfectly match your existing workflow. For an outsider, the experience feels clunky and restrictive.

What we loved

The integration into the Divi workflow is impressive.

For developers and designers committed to the Divi platform, the AI feels like a powerful extension.

Where we struggled

While the integration is deep, the actual output was underwhelming compared to other tools.

The designs generated for our test site felt dated, and many of the layout choices were questionable from a modern UX perspective.

For those not already deeply invested in the Divi ecosystem, the interface feels clunky, restrictive, and carries a much steeper learning curve than more modern "co-pilot" assistants.

Wolf IQ’s take: If your agency or business is already built around the Divi ecosystem, the AI features are certainly worth exploring to improve workflow efficiency. However, if you are not already a Divi user, there are more flexible and cost-effective starting points for leveraging AI in WordPress.

Can AI Replace an Agency?

The marketing for these AI tools is aimed squarely at business owners, promising a world where the cost and complexity of hiring a professional web design agency are things of the past.

The truth is, AI builders are not a threat to professional agencies - building a website and winning customers online are very different. The clients who will get the best results from an AI builder are not the same clients who need a professional agency.

Where AI Builders Are an Option

There are specific scenarios where we would absolutely recommend an AI builder.

Their speed and low cost make them a genuinely good fit for certain use cases:

  • Rapid Prototyping and MVPs: If you need to quickly visualise a website concept for an investor presentation or test a new business idea, an AI builder is unparalleled. You can generate a functional prototype in an afternoon.
  • Simple Brochure Sites: For a local business that just needs an online "business card"—a simple, 3-5 page site with contact information, opening hours, and a basic description of services—an AI builder is often sufficient.
  • Specific Campaign Landing Pages: If you are running a targeted marketing campaign and need a simple, single-purpose landing page, an AI builder can be a fast and cost-effective solution.
  • Businesses with Very Limited Budgets: If your budget is truly zero and you just need to get something online, an AI builder is a better option than having no website at all.

In these situations, the primary goal is speed and presence, not performance. AI builders deliver.

Where AI Builders Fall Short

For any business that views its website as a vital tool for growth, lead generation, and brand building, the limitations of AI builders quickly become expensive problems.

We have seen this pattern hundreds of times with clients who come to us after a DIY or cheap build has failed them.

SEO & Site Architecture

‍This is the single biggest failure of AI builders.

They generate flat, generic site structures without any consideration for search engine optimisation. They don’t perform keyword research, they don’t build topic clusters, and they don’t understand how to structure a site to build authority and rank for competitive terms.

Conversion Rate Optimisation

‍A business website is not a piece of art; it is a tool designed to elicit an action—a phone call, a form submission, a purchase.

AI builders optimise for aesthetics based on common design patterns, not for conversion. They have no understanding of your sales funnel, your customer’s journey, their objections, or your unique value proposition.

Brand Differentiation

‍AI models are trained on vast datasets of existing websites.

By their very nature, they produce outputs that are an average of what they have seen. This leads to generic, "cookie-cutter" designs that lack a distinct brand identity. For a business operating in a competitive market, where brand differentiation is critical, a website that looks like everyone else’s is a liability.

Custom Functionality

‍AI builders are designed for simplicity.

The moment your business needs extend beyond a basic brochure site, you will hit a wall. Whether it’s a booking system for a health clinic (which must also be AHPRA compliant) or a complex inventory and shipping integration for an eCommerce store - AI builders simply cannot accommodate these requirements yet. This is where the flexibility of a custom WordPress build becomes essential.

The True Long-Term Costs

‍The initial savings of using an AI builder are often a false economy.

A poor SEO structure necessitates higher spending on paid advertising to generate traffic. A low conversion rate means you need to attract far more visitors to hit your revenue targets.

When your business grows, eventually the limitations in functionality and scalability will force a complete professional rebuild, which costs significantly more than doing it right the first time.

How We Use AI at Wolf IQ

It's important to understand that being critical of AI builders is not the same as being resistant to AI as a technology.

At Wolf IQ, we are constantly exploring and integrating AI tools into our professional workflow to deliver better results for our clients, faster.

The key difference is that we use AI as a tool to augment our professional expertise, not as a replacement for it.

Here are a few ways AI is a part of our daily operations:

  • Content Ideation and First Drafts: For blog content like this, or for the initial copy on a new website page, we use AI to generate ideas, create outlines, and produce a rough first draft. This overcomes the “blank page” problem and allows our human copywriters and strategists to focus their time on refining, editing, and adding the nuanced brand voice and strategic messaging that AI cannot replicate.
  • Code Generation and Debugging: Our developers use AI assistants like GitHub Copilot to write boilerplate code, generate simple functions, and suggest solutions for complex debugging problems. This accelerates the development process, freeing up our senior developers to focus on high-level architecture and custom functionality.
  • Image Generation for Mood Boards: When we are in the initial design phase of a project, we use AI image generation tools to quickly create a wide range of visual concepts for a client mood board. This is far faster and more flexible than searching through stock photo libraries and allows us to establish a visual direction with the client before we begin the detailed design work.
  • Data Analysis and Summarisation: We use AI to analyse website traffic data, summarise user behaviour patterns, and identify trends that might not be immediately obvious. This allows us to make more data-driven decisions in our SEO and conversion rate optimisation strategies.

In all these cases, the AI is a powerful assistant, but the strategy, the final decision, and the quality control remain firmly in the hands of our experienced team.

Our Final Verdict and Decision Framework

Our recommendation is clear and direct. AI builders are a new and powerful type of tool, but they are not a new type of solution for a serious business.

To make it simple, here is our decision framework:

Your Situation Our Recommendation
You need something online in 24 hours and it's a low-stakes project. AI Builder (ZipWP or 10Web)
You are testing a new business idea and don't need to rank on Google yet. AI Builder
You are an existing Elementor or Divi user wanting to speed up your workflow. Integrated AI Assistant
You need your website to be a primary source of leads or revenue. Professional Agency
You need to rank on Google for competitive, high-value keywords. Professional Agency
You have custom functionality requirements (e.g., bookings, eCommerce, integrations). Professional Agency
Your brand identity and design differentiation are critical to your success. Professional Agency

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI replace web designers?‍

Not for serious business websites. AI can generate a starting point, but it cannot replace strategic thinking, brand understanding, or conversion-focused design. It is a tool that can make a good designer faster, not a tool that can make a non-designer good.

Are AI-built websites bad for SEO?‍

Often, yes. Most AI builders produce flat site structures, generic content, and bloated code that underperforms in search. A professional, SEO-first build is still the standard for any business that relies on organic traffic for growth.

What are the hidden costs of AI website builders?‍

The main hidden costs are the business opportunities you lose. This includes lost revenue from poor conversion rates, higher advertising spend to compensate for a lack of organic traffic, and the eventual cost of a professional rebuild when the business outgrows the site's limitations.

Can I move my AI-built website to another host?‍

It depends on the tool. Full site generators like ZipWP produce a standard WordPress installation that can be migrated to any host. However, platforms that are tied to their own hosting, like 10Web or proprietary systems like Wix and Squarespace, create vendor lock-in.

How much does a professional WordPress website cost in Australia?‍

This is a complex question that depends on the scope of the project. We have written a detailed guide on this topic, which you can read here: How Much Does a Website Cost in Australia?
